WELCOME TO THE TOWNSCAPE HERITAGE INITIATIVE - A PROJECT TO RESTORE THE BUILT ENVIRONMENT OF PORTAFERRY
WHAT IS IT?
The Townscape Heritage Initiative (THI) is a grant-aid programme for the regeneration of the historic environment in towns and cities throughout the UK and is administered by the Heritage Lottery Fund (HLF). The main aim of THI is to promote the repair and sustainable reuse of vacant or under used buildings that contribute to the townscape character of historic urban areas and to promote physical and economic regeneration within designated conservation areas.
WHAT ARE THE GRANTS FOR?
The grants are intended to assist in the restoration of eligible properties. Owners or occupiers with full repairing leases can avail of grants to bring the structure and shell of their buildings into good repair. Grants are also available to improve the conservation area as a whole by addressing smaller but no less important components such as the reintroduction of features such as railings, traditional shop fronts, windows etc where evidence of their previous existence can be established.
WHICH BUILDINGS ARE ELIGIBLE?
The THI primarily relates to three clusters of potentially eligible properties within the Conservation Area, focused on The Square, High Street and Ferry Street. In addition, a smaller number of buildings outside these clusters have been identified as being potentially eligible. A total of 27 buildings and 3 gap sites have been provisionally identified at Round 1 as being eligible for THI funding. See Eligible Properties for more information.
